Abstract: Since ancient times, man has recognized the power of wood swelling, using it to break huge stone blocks. The paper presents the results of an experimental research concerning the swelling forces developed by pine wood (Pinus sylvestris L.) and beech wood (Fagus sylvatica L.). The objective of the presented work was to determine the level and time evolution of forces developed by some pre-compressed (at different pressures) samples of pine wood and beech wood when swelling from oven-dry state until the fibre saturation point was exceeded and maximum swelling was reached. The results can be useful for various applications related to wood products, especially for the construction field.

Key words: wood swelling forces, pine, beech.
