This book presents the research results of the CNCSIS Project 450/2006-2008 "Eco-Design and Eco-Technology for Furniture and other Products Realised by Modelling, Simulating and Structuring a New Material Obtained from Secondary Natural Resources". The book is structured on 5 chapters and comprises 13 scientific papers, all presented at international conferences, which open new gates to promoting the use of branch wood in furniture. These research works identify not only new ways of using branch wood into eco-panels with transversal grain, but also the main macro- and microscopic characteristics as well as the chemical, physical and mechanical properties of branch wood compared to stem wood, adding investigations into the physical, mechanical and technological behaviour of the above mentioned eco-panels. At present, branch wood is a completely wasted secondary resource; its qualities are revealed into the structure of eco-panels having a very atractive texture that enhances the aestetics of furniture pieces which incorporate them.

This book represents a reference work in the field of wood constructions design. Within its 16 chapters and 4 appendixes, the book presents valuable elements concerning the strength calculus of wooden structures, the peculiarities of wood as a building material and its behaviour when loaded with specific forces. The book also presents other wood-based materials used in constructions, such as laminated beams (Glulam) or wood-based panels, as well as specific joints made of wood or metallic connectors. Solved design problems exemplify the strength calculus for various materials and loading cases, the book being thus not only a valuable theoretical work, but also a very practical and useful design guide.
