Abstract: Oak wood
is one of the most spread wood species in Europa,
being met from North to South from Norway to Sicily,
and from West to East from the United Kingdom
to the Ural Mountains. In Romania, the first signals
about the pathological drying of oak trees appeared
starting with 1910 in the Banat region, more exactly
between Lugoj and Caransebes. The most affected
species of oak are the pedunculate oak and the
sessile oak. These are species with a nice appearance,
used on a large scale in furniture manufacturing.
Considering that the furniture must fulfill several
conditions: aesthetical, functional and safety
ones, the necessity of determining the influence
of the pathological drying degree of pedunculate
oak wood upon its structure and properties became
obvious. The pedunculate oak wood has a complex
structure, because of the numerous cells and their
disposal. The research work on this topic has
shown that the wood structure is not affected
for the trees included in the first four degrees
of pathological drying and so, these can be safely
used in furniture manufacturing, both as solid
wood and decorative veneer.
Key words: pedunculate oak, pathological
drying, wood structure.
