TESTING THE FLATNESS OF SOME COMPOSITE PANELS DESIGNED FOR FURNITURE MANUFACTURING

Abstract: The paper
presents the results of an experimental research
regarding the flatness, as a main characteristic
to be fulfilled by the panels which are components
of furniture. The composite panels are made of
mixed glued lamellas of maple, cherry and walnut
wood. The fact of using different species of wood
in the same panel rises problems of deformability,
because of the different swelling and shrinkage
coefficients of the used hardwood species. The
initial flatness, obtained after calibration,
operation that assures an optimum shape processing
accuracy of the panel is checked afterwards and
gives information about the flatness stability
in time. The flatness testing is compulsory when
new technologies and panel structures are proposed.
The present paper intending to show an acreditated
method of flatness determination, using a modern
equipment, with a high measuring accuracy, which
is in the endowment of the Laboratory of Testing
the Processing Accuracy in Wood Industry, functioning
in the frame of the Wood Industry Faculty and
accredited by RENAR.
