Abstract: The present
paper treats the way of interpreting the roughness
of wood surfaces, measured on veneers obtained
from two species of wood: beech and oak. The comparative
study was performed by measuring the roughness
with two different apparatus: the first one with
stylus contact and the second one, an optical
system, with light beam (contact less). The results
obtained with the two apparatus have shown that
the optical method gives more accurate data about
the roughness of the surface, because in the measured
value the anatomical structure of the wood is
also included.
Key words: roughness, wooden surface,
veneer, stylus method, optical method, light beam.
