MEASURING WOOD COLOR BY MEANS OF THE CORELDRAW PROGRAM

Abstract: Color is an important characteristic of wood when evaluating its aesthetical potential and especially when it is going to be used for decorative purposes.
This paper presents an original method of measuring wood color by means of the CorelDRAW 12 program. One of the advantages of this method is that one can determine the color on small surfaces (1x1pixels; 2x2pixels and 5x5pixels). This means that the errors resulting when measuring the color on larger surfaces (when actaully an average color of the surface is assessed) are avoided.
In order to give an example, the results obtained with robinia (Robinia pseudacacia L.) wood samples are presented. Robinia (or black locust) belongs to the widespread species with a high rate of growth and a high productivity of wooden mass, which is thoroughly studied at present in order to find new fields of employment for this species, including the use for decorative wood products.
