WOODEN PRODUCTS TESTING LABORATORY IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE EUROPEAN STANDARDS CEEX Project, Module 4, No. 4136, Contract No. 195/10.08.2006

The outcome of this project is to create and achieve accreditation of a research laboratory for the certification of wooden products conformity. The performed studies will lead to the completion of the present endowment of the Mechanical Testing Laboratory from the Faculty of Wood Industry, by performing new equipment acquisitions. The installations and devices to be purchased, as well as the operational procedures to be elaborated are going to be in accordance with the European Standards presently in force.

The activities within this project are submitted to the program of creating a research infrastructure, having in view Romania's integration into the European structures. This work also creates the premises for achieving the free circulation of products and services. The laboratory will function not only as a high-tech research facility, but also as a modern educational unit, ensuring thus high-level training for the students of the Wood Industry Faculty in Brasov.

SCIENTIFIC OBJECTIVES
2006
1.1. Analysis of testing methods currently used, alignment to the international standards and the promotion of new tests.
1.2. Establishment of laboratory interior design and endowment completion.
1.3. Establishment of equipment suppliers and technical documentation with a view to equipment acquisioning.

2007
2.1. Acquisitioning of installations in order to perform the laboratory tests and putting them into function.
2.2. Elaboration of quality system documentation in order to obtain the accreditation of the laboratory.

2008
3.1. Accreditation of the testing laboratory.
3.2. Dissemination of the results and initiation of collaborations with wood industry representatives.

RESULTS
According to the project theme previously highlighted, in 2006 and 2007 the main results consisted in acquisioning performant pieces of equipment for laboratory tests, based on a detailed documentation.

These are:
- a Universal Machine for Materials Testing with Two Columns type IBX600 (Foto 1), which can perform tensile, compression, bending, shearing and hardness tests on solid wood elements;
- a Zwick/Roell Machine for Testing Wood-Based Panels (Foto 2), which performs tests related to the density profile over the panel thickness, tensile strength (internal cohesion), superficial tensilestrength (surface quality), screw withdrawal strength, bending strength and its modulus of elasticity.

The two machines are state-of-the-art technical equipment, being endowed with software and methodologies designed according to the European Standards.

Both machines were set up and put into function within the Mechanical Testing Laboratory from the Faculty of Wood Industry, being delivered according to the required specification norms.
During the same period of time, the quality system documentation was elaborated, with a view to filing for the laboratory accreditation.
