Editorial
Motto: "It can be new only
something that became old."
"It can be new only something that has already
been forgotten."
As anticipated in the previous editorial, June
has been a "hot" month for the whole
staff of our faculty ! Not only because summer
began early, but especially due to the two major
scientific events hosted and organized by our
faculty during this period.
Thus, between 17-19 June, the Aula of the "Transilvania"
University in Brasov hosted the VIII-th Workshop
within the European programme COST E37, under
the motto: "To satisfy the requirements of
the present generation without compromising the
chances of future generations to satisfy their
requirements as well". Under the coordination
of Prof.dr.chim. Cristina-Maria TIMAR and her
team, this reunion, attended by 53 delegates from
24 European countries and over 50 representatives
from Romanian institutions, was perfectly organized.
The social program which completed the scientific
activities also contributed to achieve the main
objective of the COST E37 Action: emphasizing
the importance of wood durability from the viewpoint
of sustainable development, by promoting new alternative
technologies for preservation and for increasing
the natural durability of wood, so as to make
it "new" even if it "gets old"
!
The second major event organized by our faculty,
was the 6-th edition of the International Conference
"WOOD SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING IN THE THIRD
MILLENNIUM", which took place within the
same venue between 20-22 June 2007. The team coordinated
by Prof.dr.eng. Mihai ISPAS ensured all conditions
for the good unfolding of the conference program,
attended by 100 participants (out of which 49
foreign attenders from 16 countries from all over
the world). A total of 83 papers, distributed
in 10 sections were presented. Following up the
tradition of the previous editions, the conference
topics comprised all aspects related to wood engineering.
I hereby wish to congratulate the coordinators
and all colleagues involved for having assured
the successful organization of these events. Moreover,
I hope that the image of Brasov, of Romania and
last, but not least, the scientific and organizatoric
potential of the Wood Industry Faculty will be
transmitted further by all participants toward
their home institutions.
Part of the impressions expressed by the foreign
attenders of these two events are also presented
within the Epilogue which ends this special edition
of PRO LIGNO Journal, exclusively dedicated to
the integrally bilingual publication of relevant
papers presented within these two conferences.
We hereby wish to raise the interest of the industrial
woodprocessing sector in Romania, in order to
determine a more active participation of their
representatives in similar future events, considering
that science, as organised knowledge, leads to
an outcome only if transmitted to those who are
interested in it.
