Abstract:
The structure peculiarities as well as the presence of abnormal colorations in beech wood strongly influence its conversion technology. In order to improve efficiency, both in terms of quality and quantity, band saws should be more and more considered, as only live sawing by means of band saws allows the adaptation of the sawing pattern to the variable quality of beech logs and the correct capitalization of this type of wood for better paid boards, with exact destinations. The unchallenged superiority of modern, numerically controlled vertical band saws is determined by the spectacular increase of the production capacity, better processing accuracy and fiability, which does not support any comparison with the ones manufactured and used 20 years ago. All needs and exigencies of beech timber producers can be met, the actual technical offer being wide and diverse. The present paper is trying to indicate the ways to be followed in order to rapidly select the best, most suitable and most efficient band saw to be attached to a certain technology.

Key words: conversion band saw, lumber, conversion capacity, cutting conditions, optimum exploitation.
