Abstract:
Keeping and favouring folk traditions in art and furniture revive and redefine the culture, history and civilization of any nation. This applies also to the Szeklers living in the central part of Romania (Ardeal), in two counties (Harghita and Covasna) mainly. The furniture pieces kept in Szekler dwellings from Odorheiu Secuiesc region represent a proof of this statement. This paper presents the results of a research regarding the shape, the constructive elements and the ornamentation specific to Szekler furniture, as found in regional dwellings and the Museum from Odorheiu Secuiesc. The analysis of these elements confirmed the existence of a specific Szekler folk art, mainly used in furniture decoration. They can constitute an important database for the design of new products, but also as restoration of old furniture is concerned.
Key words: Szekler furniture, structures, carved ornaments, painted ornaments.
